ONGOING
April 29 – June 6 Smithsonian’s “New Harmonies – American Roots Music” Exhibit at the Fairfield County Historical Museum. “Roots Music” is known by names like blues, country western, folk ballads, and gospel. The main beat of the exhibition is the on-going cultural process that has madeAmericathe birthplace of more music than any place on earth. The exhibition provides a fascinating, inspiring, and toe-tapping listen to the American story of multi-cultural exchange.
The exhibit explores many aspects of America’s roots music as it pertains to our community heritage, and the program encourages the hosting of additional events organized by other local partnering organizations. The Museum will augment the Smithsonian exhibit by featuring the special genre of our nation’s musical history that developed around the textile mill towns. An example of local songwriting is “The Winnsboro Cotton Mills Blues.” It was written as a social protest song sometime in the early decades of the 20th C and Pete Seeger popularized the tune. A video will be presented by the museum featuring the song and a photographic montage of textile mill from early decades.
Special exhibit celebrating the roots of American music in events of the times. Associated events are planned. 231 S Congress St 803 635-9811
